5 things you need to know about Academic Vocabulary

Learning vocabulary is about so much more than ticking off words on a list as you manage to match a written word form to a surface meaning or translation. For a learner to say they really know a word, especially if they hope to count it amongst their productive vocabulary, then it takes time, repeated encounters, and digging a bit below the surface. This, of course, is true of all language learners, but for those learning English for academic purposes (EAP) the specific aspects of vocabulary knowledge differ somewhat. Graded Readers and 21st Century Skills

Graded readers then and now

Using graded readers to help learners to improve their reading, writing, speaking and listening skills is not a recently discovered English teaching technique. In the 1920s, for instance, Dr Michael West edited a series called New Method Supplementary Graded Readers (Longman) with exactly this aim, and these were not the first simplified story books for foreign learners of English. Nowadays, most ELT publishers produce a wide range of readers designed to appeal to different age groups. Use of drama-based activities in ELT classroom

Abstract

Drama can encourage students actively participate in teaching-learning process for English language. It can practically be a motivational tool to increase the zest of adapting language capacity. The researcher conducted this research at Navsari High School, Navsari, which involved 50 students of Vernacular Medium class of 9Th standard. Four basic aspects of speaking- Grammar, Fluency, Accuracy and Vocabulary- were taken into consideration for this research, and the same were used to analyse the scores. The data analysis indicated that the mean score of the students’ Pre-test was 7.57, while that of the students’ post-test was 17.78.  Hence it signified that use of drama based activities in classroom can really enhance speaking skills of ESL learners.
