Abstract

Communication is an essential ingredient of any system. It’s effective use can enhance our efficiency in any field of endeavor and improper use can lead to disastrous consequences. Effective communication, therefore, leads to more effective performance and provides information necessary for an enterprise to adjust to changing world. Communication is effective if each step is completed properly and it can break down if any step is incomplete or blocked by barriers to effective communication. To avoid miscommunication or not to communicate at all one needs to learn to speak first. Many people are not able to communicate due to lack of developed speaking skill. This paper focuses on the strategies of teaching speaking skills in context to role play and communicative tasks. If speaking skill is developed properly the person will feel comfortable to communicate. This paper describes an investigation that was conducted on the students of engineering college.

Author note

This research work is carried on by me in the hope of answering many queries which posed a challenge in my service as a teacher. My students, specially in the rural areas where I served, always expressed their wish to speak in English and asked for solutions. The prescribed texts and curriculum could not answer their questions nor offer me any solutions. Hence, this research is designed in the hope of getting some guidance to the teaching and learning processes. As anticipated, it gave a big boost both to the teachers and learners. (more…)

Abstract

Definitions of scientific terms, descriptions of scientific and technological processes and procedures, and the like have a pride of place in most of the scientific writings. As a result, the students who pursue their undergraduate or masters program in science and technology in various universities across the world require to use several expressions in their writing tasks intended to define, describe and discuss certain concepts pertaining to their respective domains of knowledge. Among them, expressions to explain causes & effects, purposes & functions are more frequently used than others in the writing tasks carried out by the students of science and technology. This article discusses the strategies and the practice exercises that can be used by the teachers of ESP (English for Specific Purposes) to teach the expressions of cause, effect, purpose and function in their ESP classes.
