ABSTRACT

Presentations skills and public speaking skills are very useful in many aspects of work and life. Effective presentations and public speaking skills are important in business, sales and selling, training, teaching, lecturing and generally entertaining an audience. Developing the confidence and capability to give good presentations, and to stand up in front of an audience and speak well, are also extremely helpful competencies for self-development too. Presentations and public speaking skills are not limited to certain special people – anyone can give a good presentation, or perform public speaking to a professional and impressive standard. Like most things, it simply takes a little preparation and practice. The paper is based on the ways of improving presentation skill in Business English Classroom. A short period course is designed for a group of learners who is good in English language but lacking presentation skills. The course is for twenty days period with three hours each day. The learners are basically in the field of Engineering and having their own business organizations. The course was tested with five groups. Abstract

Definitions of scientific terms, descriptions of scientific and technological processes and procedures, and the like have a pride of place in most of the scientific writings. As a result, the students who pursue their undergraduate or masters program in science and technology in various universities across the world require to use several expressions in their writing tasks intended to define, describe and discuss certain concepts pertaining to their respective domains of knowledge. Among them, expressions to explain causes & effects, purposes & functions are more frequently used than others in the writing tasks carried out by the students of science and technology. This article discusses the strategies and the practice exercises that can be used by the teachers of ESP (English for Specific Purposes) to teach the expressions of cause, effect, purpose and function in their ESP classes.

Author’s Note

This manuscript is inspired by the researcher’s initiative to recognize how Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) approach works in the language classrooms in St. Paul University Dumaguete. All the sources that substantiate the body of literature of this paper are carefully identified and acknowledged. The main sections of the paper are presented but the researcher had to reduce some of which for a facilitative reading.

Contribution Statement

Communicative competence, as it is the goal of the CLT approach, shapes the whole notion of this research work. As such, this paper advances the theory that employing real-life situations in the classroom require authentic communication, thus, facilitates successful language learning. (more…)
