Focused on the aspirations \u2013 and needs \u2013 of intermediate\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/compellingconversations.com\/blog\/2011\/06\/05\/english-teachers-confront-billion-person-question\/\">English language learners<\/a>, our new book shows a variety of ways to create and sustain authentic conversations with a developing English vocabulary.\u00a0\u00a0<em>Compelling American Conversations<\/em>challenges intermediate\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/compellingconversations.com\/blog\/2011\/06\/05\/english-teachers-confront-billion-person-question\/\">English language learners<\/a>\u00a0to reflect and speak about their lives and experiences on 15 topics in class and in English.\u00a0 Knowing English should include the ability to speak English.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><a title=\"See Sample chapters from Compelling American Conversations\" href=\"http:\/\/www.compellingconversations.com\/sample-chapters-combined.php\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>See sample chapters from Compelling American Conversations here.<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Therefore, we deliberately chose to emphasize\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/compellingconversations.com\/blog\/2011\/06\/05\/english-teachers-confront-billion-person-question\/\">speaking skills<\/a>\u00a0and fluency in Compelling American Conversations. Each chapter includes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Two sets of partner interview questions on each topic<\/li>\n<li>Discussion activities to explore, explain, and clarify<\/li>\n<li><a title=\"Search and Share\" href=\"http:\/\/compellingconversations.com\/search-and-share.php\" target=\"_blank\">Search and share\u00a0<\/a>online activities where students select materials on specific topics, summarize and evaluate the video\/article, and introduce to small groups of classmates.<!--more--><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We also include academic vocabulary and more philosophical questions because American immigrants deserve the same level of sophisticated materials which international English as Foreign Language (EFL) students enjoy in the stronger international high schools.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Focused vocabulary for both practical and academic purposes<\/li>\n<li>Paraphrasing American proverbs \u2013 and others from around the world<\/li>\n<li>\u201cAgree\/Disagree and explain\u201d reaction exercises to classic and modern quotations often used to prepare for TOEFL and IELTS exam<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>From our perspective, there is something profoundly disturbing in dumbing down of curriculum materials for\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/compellingconversations.com\/blog\/2011\/06\/05\/english-teachers-confront-billion-person-question\/\">English language learners<\/a>\u00a0in the United States.\u00a0<a title=\"Compelling American Conversations\" href=\"http:\/\/www.compellingconversations.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Compelling American Conversations<\/em><\/a>\u00a0seeks to introduce higher expectations for verbal skills and more authentic materials and relevant topics to the intermediate ELL and ESL classrooms.
