{"id":4001,"date":"2013-05-12T07:00:47","date_gmt":"2013-05-12T07:00:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.eltweekly.com\/elt-newsletter\/?p=4001"},"modified":"2013-05-12T07:00:47","modified_gmt":"2013-05-12T07:00:47","slug":"vol-5-issue-16-conference-39th-international-byron-conference-london-july-1-6-2013","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/eltweekly.humbeestudio.xyz\/?p=4001","title":{"rendered":"Vol. 5 Issue 16 \u2013 Conference: &#8217;39th International Byron Conference&#8217;, London, July 1-6, 2013"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong style=\"color: #ff0000; text-align: center;\"><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong>ELTWeekly Vol. 5 Issue#16 | May 13, 2013 |\u00a0<strong>ISSN 0975-3036<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This conference will examine Byron\u2019s engagement with politics in the widest sense: as a poet, as a member of the House of Lords, as a commentator on his time, and latterly as a would-be revolutionary.<\/p>\n<p>Academic sessions might include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Byron and the politics of culture<\/li>\n<li>Political style in Byron\u2019s writing<\/li>\n<li>Byron and the politics of the \u2018Other\u2019<\/li>\n<li>Byron and the politics of emergent nations (Italy, Greece, the Americas)<\/li>\n<li>Byron and the House of Lords<\/li>\n<li>Byron and Napoleon<\/li>\n<li>Byron as social satirist<!--more--><\/li>\n<li>Byron and revolution<\/li>\n<li>Byron as liberal and\/or libertine<\/li>\n<li>Byron and religion<\/li>\n<li>Byron and social class<\/li>\n<li>Byron and gender\/sexual politics<\/li>\n<li>Byron and British political parties<\/li>\n<li>Byron and imperialism<\/li>\n<li>Byron and celebrity<\/li>\n<li>Byron\u2019s posthumous political influence<\/li>\n<li>The \u2018Byron legend\u2019 (construction and\/or appropriation)<\/li>\n<li>\u2018Words and things\u2019 (literature versus action in Byron\u2019s life and work)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Proposals for papers on these and other aspects of Byron and politics, or the politics of Byron\u2019s poetry, are welcome. Please send 250-word proposals by 28 February 2013 to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/mail.google.com\/mail\/?view=cm&amp;fs=1&amp;tf=1&amp;to=byron.conference@kcl.ac.uk\" target=\"_blank\">byron.conference@kcl.ac.uk<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Individual presentations must not exceed 20 minutes in length. In order to accommodate the maximum number of presentations in the programme, the organisers hope to include one or more \u2018round-table\u2019 discussions around specific themes. Individual contributions to these discussions would typically be of 5-10 minutes. If you would be willing for your proposal to be included in a \u2018round-table\u2019 session, please indicate this when you send it. Ready-formed proposals for such sessions, based on a particular theme, timed to last either 90 or 120 minutes, and including a minimum of 4 speakers, will be particularly welcome.<\/p>\n<p>Please note that you should normally be a current member of a national Byron Society in order to present a paper at the conference. For a list of Byron societies worldwide see\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.internationalbyronsociety.org\/\">www.internationalbyronsociety.org<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Bursaries for student presenters<em>\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\nLimited funds are available to help selected students meet the cost of presenting a paper at the conference (either as individual speakers or as Round Table participants). If you wish to be considered for one of these, please indicate this clearly in your proposal.
