English as the International Language of Research<\/strong><\/p>\n

Paper Abstract:\u00a0<\/strong>The annual world output of research papers and scholarly ar\u00a0<\/sup>ticles is large and increasing, and there is little doubt that\u00a0<\/sup>English is the medium of publication for the majority of such\u00a0<\/sup>papers. However, closer analyses of the available data reveal\u00a0<\/sup>rather few papers from non- native speakers, especially from\u00a0<\/sup>the Third World. This imbalance sug gests that English is only\u00a0<\/sup>the International Language of Research in a receptive sense.\u00a0<\/sup>It needs to become so in a productive sense as well if Third\u00a0<\/sup>World investment in doctoral scholarship etc. is to remain justified.\u00a0<\/sup>Unfortunately, the ESP profession has concentrated on undergraduate\u00a0<\/sup>teaching programmes and rather neglected the teaching of Research\u00a0<\/sup>English. However, there are now welcome signs of change, which\u00a0<\/sup>may therefore aid a process of making English a truly international\u00a0<\/sup>language rather than one over-restricted in terms of publication\u00a0<\/sup>sources to the Northern Hemisphere.<\/p>\n
