It refers to teaching subjects such as science, history and geography to students through a foreign language. This can be by the English teacher using cross-curricular content or the subject teacher using English as the language of instruction. Both methods result in the simultaneous learning of content and English.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.onestopclil.com\" target=\"_blank\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.onestopclil.com\/upload\/public\/docimages\/image\/g\/i\/n\/clil_wordle.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"445\" height=\"255\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The term CLIL was coined by David Marsh, University of Jyv\u00e4skyl\u00e4, Finland (1994):<em>&#8220;CLIL refers to situations where subjects, or parts of subjects, are taught through a foreign language with dual-focused aims, namely the learning of content and the simultaneous learning of a foreign language.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>However, CLIL teaching has been practised for many years, from\u00a0the Babylonian era\u00a0to the early sixties when bi-lingual education was introduced in many schools around the world. Even if you are unaware of the term CLIL, you may already have been using CLIL methodology for many years.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Are you a CLIL teacher?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There are many ways of describing the characteristics attributed to CLIL.\u00a0You may already be following and using many of\u00a0its principles.
