{"id":4813,"date":"2014-07-19T07:21:56","date_gmt":"2014-07-19T07:21:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/eltweekly.com\/?p=4813"},"modified":"2014-07-19T07:21:56","modified_gmt":"2014-07-19T07:21:56","slug":"article-how-the-fifa-world-cup-can-inform-english-language-teaching","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/eltweekly.humbeestudio.xyz\/?p=4813","title":{"rendered":"Article: How the FIFA World Cup\u2122 can inform English Language teaching"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\">[ELTWeekly Volume 6, Issue 18 | July 21, 2014 | ISSN 0975-3036]<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p style=\"color: #363636;\">The Cambridge English blog has published an article on FIFA World Cup&#8217;s influence on ELT.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The 2014 FIFA World Cup\u2122 has had everything \u2013 great goals, classic matches, drama, controversy and even a linguistic study from the team here at Cambridge University Press.<\/p>\n<p>We used the World Cup to showcase the power of the Cambridge English Corpus, a multi-billion-word database of written and spoken English language taken from a huge range of media sources. Throughout the tournament, our language research team analysed this database to discover the media\u2019s sentiment towards the competition and participating countries.<\/p>\n<p>The less said about the words associated with England (\u2018exciting\u2019, \u2018disappointing\u2019, \u2018inexperienced\u2019) the better, but with the curtain coming down on proceedings over the weekend, it comes as no surprise the \u2018powerful\u2019, \u2018focussed\u2019 and \u2018committed\u2019 Germans ended up victorious in their pursuit of a fourth World Cup title, defeating the Argentinians who played with \u2018confidence\u2019 and \u2018flair\u2019 but were often seen as \u2018unconvincing\u2019 on their way to the final.<br \/>\n<span id=\"more-1204\"><\/span><br \/>\nSpeaking about the study, Dr Claire Dembry from our language research team said, \u2018The breadth of sources we\u2019ve analysed over the course of the tournament means we\u2019re able to give a unique insight into the mood surrounding each team.
