About the conference: Marginalization and Indian English Literature<\/strong><\/p>\n

Marginalization is social disadvantage and relegation to the fringe of\u00a0society. It is a term used widely in the United Kingdom and Europe, and was\u00a0first used in France. It is used across disciplines including education,\u00a0sociology, psychology, politics and economics. It is also called social\u00a0exclusion.<\/p>\n

Social exclusion is the process in which individuals or entire communities\u00a0of people are systematically blocked from rights, opportunities and\u00a0resources that are normally available to members of society and which are\u00a0key to social integration.<\/p>\n

The resulting alienation or disenfranchisement is often connected to a\u00a0person\u2019s social class, education status, relationships in childhood and\u00a0living standards. It also applies in varying degrees to people with a\u00a0disability, minorities, fair sex, to the elderly, and to youth. Anyone who\u00a0deviates in any perceived way from the norm of a population may become\u00a0subject to coarse or subtle forms of social exclusion.<\/p>\n

The outcome of social exclusion is that affected individuals or communities\u00a0are prevented from participating fully in the economic, social, and\u00a0political life of the society in which they live. Material deprivation is\u00a0the most common result of this exclusion. Ensuing poverty, emotional and\u00a0psychological trauma, and its resulting diseases may result in catastrophic\u00a0damage to lives, health, and psyche.<\/p>\n

Marginalization is a multidimensional process of progressive social rupture,\u00a0detaching groups and individuals from social relation and institutions and\u00a0preventing them from full participation in the normal, normatively\u00a0prescribed activities of the society in which they live.<\/p>\n

One model to conceptualize social exclusion and inclusion is that they are\u00a0on a continuum on a vertical plane below and above the \u2018social horizon\u2019.\u00a0According to this model, there are ten social structures that impact\u00a0exclusion and can fluctuate over time: race, geographic location, class\u00a0structure, globalization, social issues, personal habits and appearance,\u00a0education, religion, economics and politics.<\/p>\n

In an alternative conceptualization, social exclusion theoretically emerges\u00a0at the individual or group level on four correlated dimensions: insufficient\u00a0access to social rights, material deprivation, limited social participation\u00a0and a lack of normative integration. It is then regarded as the combined\u00a0result of personal risk factors (age, gender, race); macro-societal changes\u00a0(demographic, economic and labor market developments, technological\u00a0innovation, the evolution of social norms); government legislation and\u00a0social policy; and the actual behaviour of business, administrative\u00a0organizations and fellow citizens.<\/p>\n

Marginalization at the individual level results in an individual\u2019s\u00a0exclusion from meaningful participation in the society. More broadly, many\u00a0women face social exclusion. Today, women are still marginalized from\u00a0executive positions and continue to earn less than men in upper management\u00a0positions. Another example of individual marginalization is the exclusion of\u00a0individuals with disabilities from the labour force. Some intellectuals and
\nthinkers are marginalized because of their dissenting, radical or\u00a0controversial views on a range of topics, including HIV\/AIDS, sex climate\u00a0change, evolution, alternative medicine, green energy, or third world\u00a0politics.<\/p>\n

This conference is expected to serve an interdisciplinary forum for\u00a0intellectual deliberations, constructive discussions and positive\u00a0conclusions about the theme of the conference.\u00a0 It will highlight the need\u00a0of such study and its contributions to literary development.<\/p>\n

Further, the conference will serve as the platform to new generation\u00a0thinkers to share their views and experiences.<\/p>\n

Call for papers<\/strong><\/p>\n

The abstract of papers in about 200-250 words must reach the organizers\u00a0before 5th Feb, 2015 by email as an attachment, with \u2018Submission of\u00a0Abstract\u2019 typed in the subject field by email to\u00a0ymceng@gmail.com<\/a>. The\u00a0acceptance of the abstract will be communicated immediately. The abstracts\u00a0accepted for presentation will be published in ISBN numbered proceeding. The\u00a0participants whose abstracts are accepted have to submit the full paper\u00a0before 7th February 2015 by email as an attachment, with \u2018Submission of\u00a0Full Paper\u2019 typed in the subject field to\u00a0ymceng@gmail.com<\/a>. The selected\u00a0papers will be published in the book form immediately after the conference.<\/p>\n

Specifications for submission of abstract\/full paper:<\/strong><\/p>\n

The papers should be in MS-Word format with Times New Roman font, 12 point\u00a0size, 1.5 line spacing and be in the latest MLA style with restriction of\u00a08-10 pages. Papers related to Marginalization and Indian English Literature
\nalone will be accepted for presentation and publication.<\/p>\n

Deliberations:<\/strong><\/p>\n

The conference will have plenary sessions, paper presentation sessions and\u00a0panel discussion. The official language of the conference will be English.\u00a0Provision will be made for the use of standard presentation tools for the\u00a0convenience of the paper presenters.<\/p>\n
