Concept Note<\/strong><\/p>\n

Michael Halliday in his lecture \u2018New Ways of Meaning: the Challenge to\u00a0Applied Linguistics\u2019 at the AILA conference in Saloniki in 1990\u00a0focused on the widespread metaphor of economic growth; while\u00a0describing how English language has become pervaded with terms such as\u00a0large, grow, tall – all of which are implicitly evaluated as positive\u00a0and good, despite inevitably negative consequences for the ecology. In\u00a0today\u2019s world the focus is on sustainability and development of the\u00a0individual without hampering the environment in which we live. All\u00a0thoughts of development today are merely fictitious unless it annexes\u00a0people of the world with the real issues they face every day. While\u00a0one communicates through one\u2019s mother tongue, it becomes mandatory for\u00a0everyone to connect through a common medium and a common language in\u00a0order to understand the challenges and to suggest remedies through\u00a0various ways. English as a language has all over the world been a\u00a0uniting force albeit its criticism from time to time. The success of\u00a0the World Wide Web is because of its accessibility in English.\u00a0Innovative technology has brought a remarkable change in the minds of\u00a0people and the geographical boundaries are being reduced. English is\u00a0at the root of all such changes. As a consequence, the teaching and\u00a0learning of English today has become sine qua non. In a way,
\nCommunication and development have become synonymous with each other.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Development today should be one that can sustain. The Brundtland\u00a0Commission, led by the former Norwegian Prime MinisterGro Harlem\u00a0Brundtland defined sustainable development as development that “meets\u00a0the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future\u00a0generations to meet their own needs.” Sustainability is connected to\u00a0the economic, social, institutional and environmental aspects of human\u00a0society, as well as the non-human environment.Language learning and\u00a0teaching carry us across all sorts of borders: national, cultural,
\ndisciplinary, psychological, and of course linguistic. In modern times\u00a0English has emerged as the language of the globalized world. In\u00a0addition to professional skills, today\u2019s multi-faceted professional\u00a0world demands fluency and accuracy in English. Such a demand has\u00a0influenced the culture and tradition of society. It not only demands
\nnew skills in students but also affects the teaching-learning process.<\/p>\n

In such a scenario, we aim at exploring ways in which ELT is\u00a0beneficial not only for the masses but also for the environment in\u00a0which we live. The conference will address various questions related\u00a0to ELT, such as: Does it help in developing economy, reducing\u00a0inequalities and preventing marginalization? An attempt will also be\u00a0made to understandtasks\/activities that can be done in an ELT\u00a0classroom to foster all-round development. We welcome submissions for\u00a0innovative presentations that can reflect the various possibilities\u00a0within and surrounding the field of English language education.<\/p>\n
