{"id":5747,"date":"2016-04-04T10:12:30","date_gmt":"2016-04-04T10:12:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/eltweekly.com\/?p=5747"},"modified":"2016-04-04T10:12:30","modified_gmt":"2016-04-04T10:12:30","slug":"clil-the-3-dimensions-of-content-oup-elt-blog","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/eltweekly.humbeestudio.xyz\/?p=5747","title":{"rendered":"CLIL: the 3 Dimensions of Content (OUP ELT Blog)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">[ELTWeekly Volume 8, Issue 8\u00a0| April\u00a04<\/span><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">, 2016 | ISSN 0975-3036]<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>It remains an interesting irony that subject teachers have been exhorted, ever since the famous Bullock Report in 1975, to become ersatz-language teachers in the \u2018Language across the curriculum\u2019 movement, whilst language teachers have never been exhorted to understand the world of content.\u00a0 They remain in the dark when it comes to subject teaching, and rarely observe teachers in \u2018normal\u2019 classrooms.\u00a0 The closest they often get to that world is by practising \u2018Soft CLIL\u2019 (allegedly \u2018language-led) but this is something of a misnomer.\u00a0 Why would we want to make something \u2018language-led\u2019?\u00a0 Why not make it \u2018concept-led\u2019?\u00a0 Just use the language to help.\u00a0 If subject teachers are being asked to understand language, why cannot language teachers be asked to understand (and use) content?\u00a0 After all, there is a huge <em>smorgasbord<\/em> of the stuff out there, just waiting to be used.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Nevertheless, if language teachers want to understand and contribute to CLIL, for example in a bilingual school context or in any school dabbling with the approach, then it\u2019s useful to understand the three-dimensional aspect of \u2018content\u2019.\u00a0 The world of CLIL is basically<em>conceptual<\/em>, <em>procedural<\/em> and <em>linguistic<\/em>.\u00a0 Language is also content, when viewed from this perspective. At any point in a lesson, the teacher may find that one of these dimensions is more prominent than the other.\u00a0 If the <em>conceptual<\/em> dimension (demand) is high then the
