But where can you find a suitable corpus of academic texts?<\/p>\n<p>The British National Corpus (BNC), available <a href=\"http:\/\/corpus.byu.edu\/bnc\/\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>, covers both spoken and written language and has an academic component. The <a href=\"http:\/\/corpus.byu.edu\/coca\/\" target=\"_blank\">Corpus of Contemporary American English<\/a> (COCA)\u00a0is similar in content.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">These corpora are very large: the BNC contains 100 million words in total (16 million academic), while COCA holds 450 million words (81 million academic). Another freely available resource is <a href=\"https:\/\/the.sketchengine.co.uk\/open\/\" target=\"_blank\">The British Academic Written English Corpus<\/a> (BAWE), which contains over 6 million words of high quality student writing. The examples I\u2019ve used here come from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lextutor.ca\/conc\/eng\/\" target=\"_blank\">The Compleat Lexical Tutor<\/a>, which provides several smaller academic corpora.
