Advanced learners and their needs (Cambridge Conversations)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">[ELTWeekly Volume 8, Issue 13 | July 25<\/span><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">, 2016 | ISSN 0975-3036]<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p>In this week\u2019s webinar, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cambridge.org\/cambridgeenglish\/catalog\/adult-courses\/cambridge-english-empower\" target=\"_blank\">Cambridge English Empower<\/a> author <a title=\"Watch more webinars by Craig!\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cambridge.org\/elt\/blog\/tag\/craig-thaine\/\">Craig Thaine<\/a> explored the differences between teachers\u2019 perceptions of learners\u2019 needs, and learners\u2019 own views. Sharing the results of a case study of a small multi-lingual group of advanced level learners studying at a private English school, Craig considered what the survey tells us not only about what advanced learners want to study, but also how they want to study.<\/p>\n<p>Craig began the webinar by considering the key characteristics of advanced learners, according to both the teachers and learners involved in the case study. In the absence of any generally agreed definition of what we mean by \u2018advanced\u2019 learners, he agreed that the best option might be to adopt a \u2018family resemblance\u2019 approach, where advanced learners are seen as sharing some, but not necessarily all, of a set of characteristics.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The teachers in this case study saw advanced learners as capable of keeping a conversation going with ease, able to communicate their ideas, but with some inaccuracy \u2013 poor use of verb forms, for instance. Learners\u2019 views, by contrast, focused more on positives than negatives, concentrating on their ability to use a wider range of vocabulary, and to communicate with greater ease, variation, and less nervousness.
