Subjects such as Science, Maths, Geography and Economics are being taught through the medium of English \u2013 known as English Medium Instruction, or EMI.<\/p>\n<p>My definition of EMI is: \u201cThe use of the English language to teach academic subjects (other than English itself) in countries or jurisdictions in which the majority of the population\u2019s first language is not English\u201d. (Dearden, 2015)<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>EMI started at tertiary level in universities seeking to \u2018internationalise\u2019 their education offer. They wanted to attract students from abroad, prepare their home students to study and work abroad, publish in English and survive in an increasingly competitive education market-place \u2013 and still do!<\/p>\n<p>Why EMI?<\/p>\n<p>There seem to be different reasons why institutions \u2018go EMI\u2019.
