From their comments \u2013 many of which were generously long and thoughtful \u2013 three main ideas emerged:<\/p>\n<p>1) We need to define the term \u2018authentic\u2019 and also include in the discussion the ideas of \u2018adapted\u2019 and \u2018semi-authentic\u2019 materials.<\/p>\n<p>2) Authentic materials offer great advantage over materials written for the purpose of language learning.<\/p>\n<p>3) There are also many disadvantages to using them.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>In this post, I\u2019ll discuss what we mean by \u2018authentic materials\u2019 and look at some of the advantages they offer in the classroom. My next post will explore disadvantages and how to address them, including a discussion of semi-authentic materials.<\/p>\n<p><b>What do we mean by \u2018authentic\u2019?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>DM (whose work focuses on test preparation): \u2018First, we need to define terms. What are \u201cauthentic materials\u201d? For me, \u201cauthentic materials\u201d are reading texts that were written by native speakers and published in contexts designed specifically for native-speaker consumption, with no thought given to non-native accessibility.
