Suffix Based Patterns for Syllable Stress in Spoken English<\/strong><\/p>\n

As I\u2019ve discussed in my last three columns, using the wrong syllable stress patterns when you speak English creates an accent that is very difficult for native speakers to understand.<\/p>\n

I find that although many people understand this concept, they don\u2019t know always know which syllable to stress. Here are some patterns you can use to determine stress placement.<\/p>\n

One type of pattern that we use to predict which syllables receive stress are suffix-based patterns. The stressed syllables in each word are bolded<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

<\/strong><\/p>\n

In words that end with the suffixes; graphy, tion,\u00a0 ity, & ogy<\/em> stress the\u00a0syllable just before the suffix.<\/p>\n

photo<\/strong>graphy<\/p>\n

geo<\/strong>graphy<\/p>\n

educa<\/strong>tion<\/p>\n

valida<\/strong>tion<\/p>\n

curios<\/strong>ity<\/p>\n

mobil<\/strong>ity<\/p>\n

technol<\/strong>ogy<\/p>\n

biol<\/strong>ogy<\/p>\n

Words that end with the suffix ate<\/em> have a different patterns. In these words the stress falls two syllables before the suffix.<\/p>\n

gra<\/strong>duate<\/p>\n

appre<\/strong>ciate<\/p>\n

eval<\/strong>uate<\/p>\n

commun<\/strong>icate<\/p>\n

exag<\/strong>gerate<\/p>\n

ed<\/strong>ucate<\/p>\n

That means that the content words in the sentence below are stressed differently.<\/p>\n

In order to facilitate clear oral communica<\/strong>tion in English, it is vital that you learn commun<\/strong>icate using the correct syllable stress.<\/em><\/p>\n

Using English syllable stress correctly enables native English speakers to understand what you are saying without struggle or confusion. If you apply the presented here you will be able to improve the rhythm and compensability of your speech.<\/p>\n
