Please use the link at the end to read full article. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Korbey says, &#8220;Early in the school year at John Ruhrah Elementary and Middle School, co-teachers Darene Parry and Megan Healy were already diving deep into a lesson about the human heart, showing their fourth graders detailed anatomical diagrams and introducing vocabulary like\u00a0<em>cardio\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0<em>circulatory<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Surprisingly, the unit on \u201chaving a good heart\u201d\u2014rich in scientific dialogue and writing practice\u2014is not part of science class, but English language arts (ELA).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cStudents see the connections between what we are learning in ELA and other subjects,\u201d said Parry of the interdisciplinary curriculum at their school in Baltimore, Maryland, where classes often cover similar topics through different lenses and where the majority of students are English language learners. \u201cThey frequently bring up background knowledge that they\u2019ve learned in other classes, and I don\u2019t think they question why we are also learning these topics in ELA.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Parry, Healy, and their fellow Baltimore City Public Schools teachers are part of a growing group of educators who have shifted away from the traditional ELA reading curriculum&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.edutopia.org\/article\/it-time-drop-finding-main-idea-and-teach-reading-new-way\">Is it Time to Drop \u2018Finding the Main Idea\u2019 and Teach Reading in a New Way?<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.edutopia.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Edutopia<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0Holly Korbey has published a highly useful article on Edutopia.
