This volume dates from 1979 and is a gem for anyone interested in the early days of university level ELT qualifications, especially in the UK.\u00a0 Norman Whitney\u2019s is the first chapter, in which he asked, with empathy, how \u2018foreign applicants\u2019 could be helped to choose the most appropriate course for them.\u00a0 There follow chapters on the development of courses at Edinburgh, Lancaster, Bangor, Manchester and London.\u00a0 Ann Hayes offered a portrait of the British Council\u2019s own Teaching Institute in London at the time. Finally, Maria Sticchi Damiani urged teachers to foster a sense of community and sponstaneity in the classroom.<\/p>\n
