But that\u2019s got to change,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/kappanonline.org\/developing-accomplished-writers-recent-research-benjamin-wagner\/\">write Steve Benjamin and Michael Wagner for\u00a0<em>Phi Delta Kappan<\/em><\/a>, because students still struggle \u201cto produce the kinds of writing expected of them in college and the workforce.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To do a better job helping students improve their writing, the authors recommend adopting an apprenticeship framework. The concept of cognitive apprenticeships\u2014where teachers \u201cmodel how to do the task, narrating their thinking at every step, and students repeat the process, explaining their actions as they go,\u201d\u2014isn\u2019t new, yet it\u2019s rarely practiced in the classroom, write Benjamin and Wagner, who are, respectively, an education consultant, and the chief academic officer of Concord Community Schools in Indiana. \u201cIf this sort of frequent practice, reflection, and coaching were the norm, students would have to spend much more time on their writing, be taught a much more intensive writing process, and work toward much higher expectations than we see in many classrooms.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here are a few of the practices Benjamin and Wagner explore in their article, as well as advice from teachers from our own\u00a0<em>Edutopia<\/em>\u00a0content&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.edutopia.org\/article\/developing-better-writers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Read full article<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Edutopia contributor Sarah Gonser has published a useful article on imparting writing skills.
