{"id":7469,"date":"2022-02-13T11:49:04","date_gmt":"2022-02-13T11:49:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/eltweekly.com\/?p=7469"},"modified":"2022-02-13T11:49:04","modified_gmt":"2022-02-13T11:49:04","slug":"developing-social-relatedness-to-improve-learner-engagement","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/eltweekly.humbeestudio.xyz\/?p=7469","title":{"rendered":"Developing social relatedness to improve learner engagement"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cambridge.org\/elt\/blog\/author\/jade-blue\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Jade Blue<\/a> has published a useful article on learner management on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cambridge.org\/elt\/blog\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Cambridge blog<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She says, &#8220;When I was a student back in secondary school, I found that I didn\u2019t enjoy a lot of my lessons.\u00a0\u00a0Largely, this wasn\u2019t due to the teacher or the subjects I was taught, but rather my fellow students, who I often didn\u2019t feel any affinity with.\u00a0\u00a0Schools can be challenging environments, with complex and competitive social dynamics to navigate, and our willingness to engage in learning is strongly affected by social relations within the group.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Whether in primary, secondary or adult learning, social relatedness is an important impact factor in learner engagement.\u00a0\u00a0To participate successfully in the language classroom, learners need to feel comfortable interacting with others, trying out new language, and giving and receiving peer feedback.\u00a0\u00a0According to Self-Determination theory, people share a universal, innate need for social relatedness \u2013 a sense of being connected with others (Ryan &amp; Deci, 2017).\u00a0\u00a0Learners are more likely to be engaged in learning when this psychological need for relatedness is met through their interactions.\u00a0\u00a0In the current global pandemic this need is perhaps more palpable than ever before.
