As teachers, we sometimes sideline reading activities in class due to time constraints, choosing to assign them as homework instead. While learners can often do these tasks independently, we\u2019ll only be able to help them develop effective reading strategies in English \u2013 or transfer strategies from L1 \u2013 through consistent focus in class.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>4 common problems<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Class time, therefore, is one of the challenges in developing reading strategies with teens. Additionally, I\u2019ve identified four other common problems while talking with teachers over the years:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201cMy students get stuck with unknown words. They believe they need to understand every single word in the text.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cI feel that my students don\u2019t have enough background knowledge about the topic of the texts they have to read.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cReading texts in coursebooks are too long! My students give up reading them before they reach the end.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cMy teen students get lost while reading the text.
