Reading aloud to children is a recommended practice in early childhood and primary-grade classrooms that is purported to enhance vocabulary growth. General guidelines can be found in the literature, but practitioners often rely on conventional wisdom and their own instincts to embed vocabulary instruction into their read-alouds. This paper examines the instructional sequences used by four primary-grade teachers who had not participated in any specific professional development related to effective practices as they incorporated vocabulary development into their read-alouds. Research Paper: ‘Listening to Learn: Boosting Vocabulary with Interactive Activities’ by Joshu Cohen

Despite being one of our most important and most often used modalities, listening is an area of language instruction that is often overlooked by teachers and researchers alike as fertile ground for the enhancement of students’ vocabulary knowledge. For low-level learners, especially those not in full control of the first 2000 most-frequent words of English, listening may be the fastest route to acquiring a larger, more effective and retained vocabulary.
