Demonstration of the Get the Gist comprehension strategy.

Key concepts:

1. Using Get the Gist enables students to sort through all of the details in a piece of text, to find the main idea.
2. When using this strategy, you are creating a gist statement for a piece of text.
3. A gist statement must include, the most important who or what and the most important thing about the who or what.

Vol. 4 Issue 10 – Video: Strategies for Teaching Reading: Making Predictions

Coaching elementary readers to use the reading strategy of making predictions based upon a passage of text. This teacher is using the instructional model presented in Lucy Calkins’ Units of Study for Teaching Reading program. The teacher explains to the students how to focus on details presented in the narrative to make predictions using post-it notes and determine what is likey to happen to characters next.
