Gary A. Olson's book 'A Creature of Our Own Making' is a collection of 58 columns by Gary which appeared in the Chronicles of Higher Education over a span of six years. Gary A. Olson is Professor of English at Idaho State University. He is the editor and author of many books, including The Future of Higher Education: Perspectives from America’s Academic Leaders (coedited with John W. Presley).
Continuous Comprehensive Evaluation(CCE) is a new scheme of evaluation formulated by Mr. Kapil Sibal, the Minister of Human Resources Development and the Minister of Communications and Information Technology, Government of India for Classes IX and X which are affiliated to Central Board of Secondary Education. The main objective is to reduce the accumulated stress of board exams on the students and to introduce a more uniform and comprehensive pattern in education for the students all over the nation. It provides continuity in evaluation and assessment of broad based learning, covering every aspect of students’ development. CCE helps in enhancing students’ performance by identifying their learning difficulties at regular time intervals right from the commencement of the academic session and employing suitable remedial measures for improving their learning performance.
This book was written essentially to handle the concept of ‘choice’ and its effect on speakers’ linguistic determination. It elaborates upon the perception that language adoption is related to human society and its members and is influenced by space, time variation, age, gender and culture. The author has exhibited the interconnection of the choice of language with how, what, and when people would speak. In addition, it aims to shed light on how, within the environments and communities in which people are living, ‘societal factors’ integrate unconsciously, sometimes compulsorily, with their original language, as they are living in a single unified circle and each factor can affect the other.
